Background The Union Trust Tower (aka National Bank Building) was built in 1913. Located on Bankers Row, the main floor commercial level hosted a number of institutions Including, of course, Union Trust and the National Bank as well as Bank of Nova Scotia.
In the mid 00s the National Bank vacated and the space sat vacant. ASH Management, managers of the space, said that they were waiting for the right tenant before doing major renovations. In 2007 that tenant came along as Birks Inc. announced that they were relocating back to the downtown.
The grand opening for the new location took place in January 2009.
ASH, Birks and Oberti Architecture and Urban Design, who worked with Birks on their Montréal and Vancouver stores, teamed up to restore the space and in 2009 won a Heritage Winnipeg Preservation Award for their work.
