Background:
In early 2011 the Sunstone Group, developers of the Sky Condominiums, presented the city with a proposal for a 67 room boutique hotel development on city-owned land on Waterfront Drive. The 71,000 square foot parcel, which was being marketed by CentreVenture, includes the Alexander Docks, an adjacent parking area, part of Stephen Juba Park and the old pump house / Harbourmaster building.
In September 2011 the city's EPC and Standing Policy Committee on Downtown Development, Heritage and Riverbank Management approved a 50 year land-lease to Sunstone.(It is currently awaiting the ratification of City council as a whole.)
The former pump house / Harbourmaster building was vacated when the Winnipeg Police River Patrol relocated in 2005. The building sits right at, and over, the river's edge and will be converted into a restaurant and bar.
The continuation of the river trail will be done via a pathway between the hotel and restaurant.
