A big renovation is taking place at what used to be known as Kinsmen Playground No. 3 at the intersection of Sargent Avenue and Home Street. It opened September 14, 1947, and was one of several playgrounds funded by the Kinsmen Club and other community service organisations who answered the city’s call to help create outdoor recreation spaces after the Second World War. It appears that this was was vacant land, perhapds the side lotlocated on vacant land on Sargent Avenue between Home and Simcoe streets and opened on September 14, 1947. Like the other Kinsmen playgrounds, it got playground equipment, a wading pool, pool building, at a cost of around $5,000. George Jackson, president of the Kiwanis Club of Winnipeg, and Mayor Garnet Coulter were on hand at the opening ceremony. This park is now known as Home Playground and is currently undergoing major renovations.
Mystery one day will find. - Thought maybe a holdout pasture owner but homes on either side were from 1924 and 1931 respectively, so not that. - No addresses on home at least b/t between the houses, so not a case of being a side profile of a building. -1920s a fuel company – coal and wood. Maybe this was their yard for vehicles or product. (Office moved, yard stayed.) Anyway - 1947 opened as Kiwanis Playground #3 by George Jackson, president of the Winnipeg Kiwanis, and Mayor Garnet Coulter. Purchased land, spent $5,000 to put in playground equipment, building, and wading pool then donated it to the city.
