Downtown Places: Japanese Gardens

Tucked away in the Lakeview Square Development on Carlton Street is one of the least known downtown lunch spots: The Japanese Gardens.

It was inaugurated in 1974 to commemorate the sister city status of Setagaya, Japan. As you can see from this 1974 photo, the trees have grown nicely offering a peaceful and shady spot despite the busy streetscape around it.

  1. I recently visited, with great anticipation, the Japanese Gardens in downtown Winnipeg after just learning that we had one here ! Sad to say i was sorely disappointed finding this garden in a sadly neglected state. I find this sad as it is supposed to be representative of our sister relations with this Japanese city.
