Tucked away in the Lakeview Square Development on Carlton Street is one of the least known downtown lunch spots: The Japanese Gardens.It was inaugurated in 1974 to commemorate the sister city status of Setagaya, Japan. As you can see from this 1974 photo, the trees have grown nicely offering a peaceful and shady spot despite the busy streetscape around it.
I recently visited, with great anticipation, the Japanese Gardens in downtown Winnipeg after just learning that we had one here ! Sad to say i was sorely disappointed finding this garden in a sadly neglected state. I find this sad as it is supposed to be representative of our sister relations with this Japanese city.
